Modern computer networks are designed in a highly structured way. To reduce their design complexity, most networks are organized as a series of layers (totaling 7), each one built upon its predecessor, each with its own function and fulfilling roles from network communication to application interfaces. This is known as the Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) Reference Model because it deals with connecting open systems - that is, systems that are open for communication with other systems. This is a key to successful network technology integration.
